A Private Day Trip from Fes to Volubilis and Moulay Idriss

A day trip from Fes to Volubilis and Moulay Idriss Zerhoun takes you from the medieval lanes of Fes to two very different places a few kilometres apart: the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco, and the hilltop town where the country's first Muslim dynasty began.

Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was a prosperous city on the edge of the Roman Empire, and its triumphal arch, basilica, columns and floor mosaics still stand in open countryside among wheat fields and olive trees. Four kilometres away, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun spreads over two hills around the tomb of Idris I, who founded the Idrisid dynasty in the 8th century. It is one of the most important pilgrimage towns in Morocco.

This is a private trip with a driver, not a group tour: you choose the pickup time and how long you stay at each place. The price is fixed per vehicle โ€” from 1,400 MAD for up to four passengers โ€” and includes the return to Fes.

What You Will See

Roman mosaics still in placeThe floors of the houses of Orpheus, of the Athlete and of the Labours of Hercules, among others, are shown where they were laid.
The Arch of CaracallaThe triumphal arch at the end of the main street, the Decumanus Maximus, built in honour of the emperor Caracalla.
Capitol, basilica and forumThe civic centre of the Roman city, with its tall columns โ€” often with storks nesting on top.
Views over the Zerhoun plainVolubilis lies in open farmland below the Zerhoun hills. The light is best in the morning and late afternoon.
Moulay Idriss ZerhounA white town on two hills, built around the mausoleum of Idris I. The terraces above the town give the classic panorama.
The round minaretA cylindrical minaret covered in green tiles with Koranic inscriptions โ€” a very unusual shape for Morocco.
